Atcity earns tiara, title at Miss NSU pageant

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- On Nov. 5, 12 contestants competed for the tiara and title of Miss Northeastern State University 2014. During the two-hour pageant, students competed in talent, physical fitness in swimsuit, interview and beauty for the judge’s panel and the audience. The night ended with the crowning of the new Miss NSU 2014, LaTasha Atcity, Tahlequah junior.

Katie Bowin, Miss NSU 2013, performed a dance and provided her farewell speech before passing on the title and crowning the winner. As the Miss NSU 2014 Scholarship Pageant winner Atcity receives a $1,600 tuition waiver and a $500 cash scholarship. In addition to earning the crown, Atcity also won the Miss Congeniality and Overall Physical Fitness in Swimsuit awards; each consisting of a $100 cash scholarship. Atcity performed a a Tae Kwon Do dance routine for her talent and presented her platform on empowering disadvantaged youth.

Atcity is the recipient of the Cherokee Nation Scholarship, recipient of the Northeastern State University Dependent Tuition Waiver, on the president and dean’s honor rolls as well as the outstanding achievement honor roll. She is a Communication Lab consultant at the university, weekly volunteer for local elementary schools and a Sunday school teacher. Atcity works as a waitress at local restaurant Katfish Kitchen and participated in the 2013 Remember the Removal Bike Ride. She is the first in her family to attend college and aspires to be a first degree black belt by 2016.

First runner-up went to Tristin Dean, Alma, Ark. senior which includes a $1,200 tuition waiver and a $100 cash scholarship. Lucia Gray, Broken Arrow junior took second runner-up, with a $950 tuition waiver and a $50 cash scholarship. Third runner-up went to Stephanie Dorsch, Oklahoma City junior who received a $950 tuition waiver and fourth runner-up, was Shayla Thomas, Pryor sophomore who earned a $750 tuition waiver.
