NSU Alumni Association awards 2017 Legacy Scholarship

Since 1998, The Northeastern State University Alumni Association has awarded Legacy Scholarships to children, grandchildren or siblings of NSU’s alumni. This year’s awardee is Wister, Oklahoma native, Kelli Morgan.

Given annually, this scholarship is awarded to a first-time freshman selected by a committee of Alumni Association board members. The award is based on high school academic achievement, leadership and service, and an essay. The Legacy Scholarship award is $1,500 per year and is renewable for up to four years with the requirement of the recipient serving on the Future Alumni Network student board.

Morgan attended Heavener High School and had an overall grade point average of 4.0. She has been a part of the National Honor Society since 2014 and was a class officer serving as a committee chair for the 2015-2016 prom and homecoming. Morgan was a member of the varsity cheerleading team, Carl Albert Talent Search, varsity basketball team, varsity soccer team, varsity cross country team and varsity track and field team.

Morgan achieved many awards, honors and special recognitions including Superintendents Honor Roll, Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association Academic Achievement Award, 2015 State Academic Champion for varsity cheerleading and varsity track and field, 2016 State Academic Champion for varsity cheerleading, 2015-2016 Outstanding Junior Girl of the Year, 2016 All-Region Nominee for varsity cheerleading, 2016 All-State Nominee for varsity cheerleading and 2016-2017 12th-Grade Valedictorian.

Morgan plans to major in cell and molecular biology while she attends NSU.

The recipient is the legacy of her mother, Tracy Morgan, who graduated from NSU in 2015 with her Bachelor of Science in nursing.

Her mom’s experience at NSU prepared her for her career as a nurse and enriched her life in many ways.

“She told me that she credits a large portion of her success today to the nursing faculty at NSU,” Morgan said.

"I am so thankful to have been selected for the NSU Alumni Scholarship, and for receiving the honor of being a part of Future Alumni Network,” Morgan said. “I am very excited to see what NSU has in store for me. I promise to work very hard and to give back to others in the future just as you have given to me."
