Harlem Gospel Choir Comes To NSU

TAHLEQUAH An evening of foot-stomping, hand-clapping blues, jazz and gospel spirituals await audiences of the world-renown Harlem Gospel Choir for the one-night-only performance at Northeastern State University.

The Harlem Gospel Choir will perform at the NSU Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Galaxy of Stars Series. The show is sponsored by NSU, the Sequoyah Institute and Go Ye Village.

The choir is a gathering of the finest singers and musicians from various churches in Harlem, said Megan White, director of the Sequoyah Institute. Their songs of inspiration touch the depths of the soul and raise spirits to angelic heights.

One of the pre-eminent gospel choirs in the world, the Harlem Gospel Choir was founded in 1986 by Allen Bailey, who got the idea for the choir while attending a celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the renowned Cotton Club in Harlem.

From the heart of Harlem in New York City, the Harlem Gospel Choir travels the world as the ambassadors for African-American culture, and is loved for its joyous music. The choir shares its joy of faith though music, and whenever possible, raises funds for childrens charities.

The theme of every performance is bringing people and nations together and giving something back.

Tickets for the Harlem Gospel Choir are $20 for adults, $18 for NSU alumni, $16 for NSU employees, $14 for senior citizens, $10 for students and children, and $5 for NSU students. To purchase tickets, contact the NSU Box Office at 918-458-2075.

Additional funding for the show is provided by the Mid-America Arts Alliance, Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information on the Sequoyah Institutes 22nd Annual Galaxy of Stars Series, visit www.nsuok.edu/si.
