TAHLEQUAH- The U.S. Marshals Service is now accepting applications for a cooperative education program through the Northeastern State University Office of Career Services.
This cooperative program prepares potential U.S. Marshals for their future within the U.S. Marshals Service. The U.S. Marshals duties include protecting courts, prisoner custody and transportation, transportation of court detainees and executing of arrest warrants.
Students applying to the program must be a junior or senior graduating between August 2009 and May 2010, at least 20 years old and a U.S. citizen with a valid drivers license. Candidates must have a grade point average of 3.0 in their major field of study and have an overall GPA of 2.75 or above. The students must also be majoring in psychology, criminal justice, political science, sociology, public administration or social science.
This co-op is similar to an internship that lasts about four months,
said Gayle Anderson, coordinator of Career Services. Most students participate during the summer.
The application is accessible from NSU Career Services. To gain access to the application, contact the Office of Career Services at 918-444-3110. The application deadline is March 7, 2008 by 5 p.m.
Selected students will conduct interviews with the Marshal Service at NSU. After passing the structured interview, candidates will go through a full-field background investigation. Those selected will work in a USMS district office anywhere in the US for 16 weeks at the GS-4 grade level.
The USMS have recruited for the program at NSU several times in the past. Four Northeastern students have been accepted into the program, three of which accepted full time placement after finishing the cooperative. The fourth student will begin her co-op later this year.
The primary job of the USMS is still the protection of the courts. This has not changed since the first U.S. Marshal was assigned in 1780. U.S. Marshals also transport more than 180,000 prisoners a year and execute warrants. The USMS arrests 75 percent of all federal fugitives, which is more than all other federal agencies combined.
Career Services provides individual resume assistance, mock interviews, practice manuals, online resources, overall job search help, plus much more. For more information on services available through Career Services, visit the website at www.nsuok.edu/careerservices.
