Broken Arrow Native Crowned Miss NSU

TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State University student Ashley Gharibvand, of Broken Arrow, was crowned Miss NSU 2008 at the 45th annual Miss NSU Pageant on Thursday, Jan. 31. She was also the winner of the swimsuit competition.

Ashleys platform for the competition was combating childhood obesity. She graduated from Broken Arrow High School in 2005 and is attending NSU as a cellular biology major and plans to become an optometrist with her own clinic. Ashley, daughter of Jahan and Cindy Gharibvand, is a sophomore at NSU.

Michelle Bruffet, of McAlester, was named the first-runner and was also the winner of the talent competition. Holly Elizabeth Rongey, of Jenks, was named second runner-up and Miss Congeniality. Ruth Cowart, of Fort Smith Ark., was named third runner-up and Nichole Kay Gatzman, of Muskogee, was named fourth runner-up.

Other contestants included Ann Marie Fuller, of Tulsa, Kara Wooten, of Colcord, Dinah Hill, of Bixby, and Courtney Roden, of Sand Springs.

The first Miss Northeastern State College was crowned in 1960. Nancy Wheat won by a vote of the student body and held the title for one year. In 1961, the first competition was held for the title. Carol Willoughby won the contest, which has been a Northeastern tradition ever since.
