NSU Forensics Hosts the OKIE Roundup
NSU Forensics Hosts the OKIE Roundup
TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State Universitys speech and debate team played host to seven state universities and colleges at the state forensics tournament on Feb. 22-23. Schools included the University of Oklahoma, Cameron University, University of Tulsa, Oklahoma City University, Tulsa Community College, and East Central University.
This is the first time that NSU has had the opportunity to host the OKIE round up state tournament and we felt very privileged to have so many schools here at our campus,
said Lauren Duncan, Jenks graduate student and assistant director of speech and debate. The tournament was a great success, due in part to the support that came from our own faculty and staff and the donation of time from our family and friends.
Nearly 50 of NSUs faculty, administration and staff members served as judges for the competition. Local businesses, including Subway, Reasor's and Bryants Donuts, donated food items for the judges lounge.
I have been a part of the NSU community for nearly 15 years. I have never been as proud of this university as I was during the OKIE round up state tournament,
said said Dr. Amy Aldridge Sanford, assistant professor of communication studies and director of speech and debate. The faculty, staff, administration and students really pulled together and very much impressed our visitors. People went away from this tournament really feeling good about their time here and that makes me very happy.
Sanford was also pleased that NSUs speech and debate team did very well in the tournament.
There are 12 events in competitive collegiate forensics. We had students in seven of those events in the finals and 11 Top 6 finishes. We also had a debate team go to the semi-finals. This team is terrific, and Im very proud of them,
said Sanford.
NSUs team won second place overall in Individual Events (IE) sweepstakes and was the third place sweepstakes winner in combined IE and debate points for the weekend. Kat Golsan, Claremore senior, was the first place IE speaker with the most points for the tournament.
