NSU Offers Supply Chain Management Degrees

TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State University will offer undergraduate degrees in Supply Chain Management beginning in fall 2008.

Supply chain management is the process of planning, implementing and controlling the operations of the supply chain as effectively as possible, said Dr. John Schleede, dean of the NSU College of Business and Technology. A survey of professionals in the Tulsa area showed a great demand for this type of program. Northeastern Oklahoma is rapidly growing economically. With the new Gatorade plant in Pryor and other industries opening in the area, college graduates with this type of experience are in high demand.

NSU will offer a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Technology in Supply Chain Management. The courses will focus on the core areas of business administration and information systems, with classes in purchasing and inventory management, marketing logistics, and transportation of hazardous materials.

Our focus is mainly on the logistics aspect of the program, said Schleede. Students will learn how to manage the supply chain and control the flow of goods, information and other resources between the point of origin and the point of consumption to meet customer requirements.

Supply chain management is a diverse field, with career opportunities ranging from scheduling and dispatching trucks to managing warehouses. Employers offer starting salaries in the range of $40,000 to $50,000 in the field.

Wal-Mart, based in Bentonville, Ark., has provided the NSU Foundation with $50,000 to fund scholarships for students in the supply chain management program.

The new degree program was developed at NSU by Schleede, Dr. Michael Landry, associate professor of Business Administration, Dr. Anne Davey, associate professor of Management, Dale Schrimshaw, instructor of Technology, and Katy Ellis, instructor of Technology.
