NSU Education Students Honored by Martin Family Foundation, DaVinci Institute
TAHLEQUAH Three Northeastern State University College of Education students were honored as outstanding teacher education candidates by the Martin Family Foundation and the DaVinci Institute.
Lindsey Groom, of Bristow, Kristen Thumser, of Broken Arrow, and Michelle Cole, of Antlers, were three of 10 outstanding teacher education candidates from across Oklahoma named 2008 Martin/DaVinci Scholars.
Each of the nominees had to submit a lesson plan that incorporated service learning. The winners each receive $3,000 in September of the first year of teaching.
Groom was nominated by NSU's own DaVinci Faculty Fellow, Associate Professor of Math at the Broken Arrow campus Dr. Martha Parrot. Groom is an Elementary Education major. Her overall grade point average is 3.89 and she has been active in student organizations, including serving as president of Kappa Delta Pi, NSUs education honor society. Her service-learning project was entitled The Performing Arts of Butterflies. Lindsey is scheduled to graduate in May.
Thumser was nominated by Dr. Stan Sanders, assistant professor of Educational Foundations and Leadership. Thumser is an English Education major. Her overall grade point average 3.823. She transferred to NSU from Sussex County Community College in New Jersey, and has also taken classes at Centenary College and Tulsa Community College. Her service-learning project is entitled Cultivating Creative and Caring Citizens.
Cole graduated magna cum laude with an overall grade point average of 3.73 in December 2007 with her Bachelor of Science in Science Education with an emphasis in Chemistry. She was nominated by Dr. Richard Cronk, assistant professor of Educational Foundations and Leadership. Cole is currently teaching in the Tulsa Public School system. Her service learning project was entitled Community Overdose: Carbon Monoxide (CO) Poisoning in Low-Income Communities.
