NSU Scholarships in Computer Science, Math

TAHLEQUAH High school seniors interested in a career in computer science or mathematics can still apply for scholarships at Northeastern State University.

Scholarship recipients will receive up to $7,700 per year for four years, with additional awards available for summer study. The exact award amount will be determined by the students level of financial need.

NSU Computer Science and Mathematics students are thoroughly prepared for a wide variety of careers or for graduate work, said Dr. Rick Matzen, associate professor of Computer Science and the scholarship program coordinator. In addition to the financial awards, the scholarship students will get other valuable benefits including a faculty mentor to guide them through their four years at NSU and opportunities to participate in special academic, social and career preparation activities.

Funding for the scholarship program is provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation to increase the number of college graduates in mathematics and the sciences. To be eligible for the NSU scholarships, applicants must major in Computer Science or Mathematics. Related disciplines such as Math Education and Information Science do not qualify under the guidelines of the program. Interested students should explore the website www.nsuok.edu/STEMscholars for information about NSUs Mathematics and Computer Science degree programs and careers in these disciplines.

Applicants must begin college as a freshman at NSU in Fall 2008 and must demonstrate financial need according to the results of their Federal Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA). They should demonstrate in their application that they are prepared to succeed in Mathematics or Computer Science at NSU. The best applicants will have a high school GPA of 3.25 or better, ACT scores in the 20s, and positive references from high school teachers. Applicants must show a high level of interest in mathematics or computer science and demonstrate an understanding of their selected discipline.

Applications will be accepted and considered until all available funds are awarded. As soon as possible, students should file their FAFSA or have their existing FAFSA results sent to NSU and should send in a completed scholarship application, including reference forms from teachers. For information on how to file the FAFSA or how to have their results sent to NSU, students may contact the NSU Office of Financial Aid at 918-444-3456. Students who already have their FAFSA results may contact the STEM Scholarship Coordinator to discuss financial eligibility for the STEM scholarships.

For application forms, instructions, and more information on the scholarship program, students should visit the website at www.nsuok.edu/STEMscholars or contact STEM Scholarship Coordinator Dr. Rick Matzen by phone at 918-444-5846 or e-mail matzen@nsuok.edu.
