NSU Community Music Academy offers exciting lineup for new year
(Tahlequah, Okla.)-- The NSU Community Music Academy will continue to offer high-quality, individual and group instruction in music as it begins its second year this fall.
The CMA offers a choice from three different types of instruction: undergraduate instructors, instructors, and faculty instructors.
Undergraduate instructors are music majors who work directly with a mentor teacher, instructors are NSU staff or community members, and faculty instructors all hold terminal degrees in music.
The CMA is also reaching out tonon-students, as private music lessons are available to community members of all ages and on all instruments and voice. The CMA schedule runs concurrently with the NSU class schedule; lessons will begin this week and take place in the musicbuilding on the Tahlequah campus.
Two group instruction classes are also available through the CMA in the fall. Beginning Piano for ages three to six, is an innovative approach to piano study, as it takes place in NSUs digital keyboard lab and acts as a springboard to private lessons.
The class provides children with the opportunity to learn piano concepts in a social environment through ear training, singing, rhythm work, games, ensembles, performance, technique, theory and improvisation. This 16-week class will meet once per week for an hour.
Music & Me is a class offered for infants or toddlers together with their parents; and its design provides the opportunity for newborns to explore their world through music, in a hands-on, interactive course.
Parents and their infants, who cannot be older than two, can share special time together discovering rhythm, sounds and movement, while developing their own spatial reasoning and thinking skills.
Different types of music and small instruments will be used to grasp foundational concepts of melody, rhythm and steady beat.
Classes will meet once per week for 45 minutes, with two eight-week sessions per semester.
Separate classes will be available for infants 0-12 months on Saturdays from11 a.m.and 13-24 months on the same day at10 a.m.
Session I meets on Saturdays from Aug. 22 to Oct. 17, 2015 and Session II meets on Saturdays fromOct. 24 to Dec. 19, 2015. These classes cost $80.
The fall semester will conclude with a free public recital performed by students onDec. 13, in the Center for Performing Arts on NSUs concert grand Steinway piano.
This award-winning program, which now enrolls over 100 music students from the surrounding communities, was established as a result of a collaboration between the NSU Music Department and Continuing Education.
