Sequoyah Institute celebrates 30 years of performances 

(Tahlequah, Okla.)-- The lights are up, the curtain is drawn and six great performances are ready to hit the stage. The Sequoyah Institute Performing Arts Series, formerly known as the Galaxy of Stars Series, is back for its 30th year and it has an exciting lineup that will again bring national talent to Tahlequah.

We are always excited about a new season, but this being our 30th season of bringing performing artists to our community is especially exciting, Dr. Anita Thompson, executive director of the Sequoyah Institute said. We have some high caliber performers coming this year.

Hosted by Northeastern State Universitys Sequoyah Institute, the annual series hosts several performances that provide entertainment to the NSU campus and community, but also expands the knowledge and education provided by the fine arts.

The 2015 2016 season of the Sequoyah Institutes Performing Arts Series aims to provide a variety of experiences so that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Sept. 24, 2015The Chicago Tap Theatre will perform TAP Out Loud. This performance will be an adventure through history and into the future, revolving around all things tap. The Chicago Tap Theatre has long held a mission of working toward preserving Americas indigenous dance form, while simultaneously educating individuals on its rich and vibrant history.

Oct. 22, 2015 Doc Severinsen will perform with the NSU Jazz Band. Anyone familiar with, Heeeeeres Johnny, will immediately recognize Severinsens music. He performed as Johnny Carsons bandleader for nearly three decades. As Severinsen combines his talent with NSUs own, this will surely be a performance not to miss.

Nov. 9, 2015 Jimmy Webb will be performing The Glen Campbell Years. Although Jimmy Webb has topped the charts in numerous genres over the previous 50 years, his partnership with Glen Campbell is one that he holds near to his heart. Through song and the sharing of photos, video and audio clips, Webb will share memories from this special friendship.

Dec. 4, 2015Melinda Doolittle will be performing a Christmas Tour. Made famous for her appearance on the sixth season of American Idol, Doolittle will bring to the audience classic Christmas songs along with some of her very own. It will be a performance sure to get everyone in the holiday spirit.

Feb. 4, 2016The Byron Berline Band will put on a bluegrass and western swing performance. Byron Berline is an Oklahoma native and a three-time National Fiddle Champion. He has performed with many artists including: The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, John Denver, Elton John, Vince Gill and Willie Nelson.

March 29, 2016Concluding this series will be, Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience. This performance will include major audience participation, as audience members will create the playlist for the evening. Taking a trip back to the 1960s has never been more fun.

While excited about the season as a whole, Thompson is especially looking forward to some of the shows this fall. I grew up in Jimmy Webbs hometown of Elk City, Oklahoma hearing about his success.So, getting to see him perform will be a special treat for me.I also followed Melinda Doolittle while she was on American Idol and her voice blew me away when she first auditioned. She is an old soul with powerhouse vocals.She is going to bring a strong performance that will kick off the Christmas season, Thompson said.

There will be educational outreaches accompanying each of the performances to allow for those who are interested to delve a little deeper. These outreachactivitieswill include performances for localgrade school students, master classes and lectures.

Each of the performances will be at7:30 p.m. on their respective dates in the NSU Center for the Performing Arts. Both season tickets and tickets for individual shows are now available.
