Basie, Blues, and Brownies With NSU Jazz and United Way

BROKEN ARROW The Northeastern State University Jazz Studies Program will celebrate the release of the fourth CD by the NSU Jazz Ensemble, Global Citizen, and with Basie, Blues, and Brownies, a concert on the NSU-Broken Arrow campus. The concert is Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m., at the Building A Banquet Hall. Admission is $3, with proceeds from the gate going to the NSUBA-United Way fundraising drive.

We are equally excited about helping NSUBAs United Way drive as we are about the release of our new CD, said Dr. Arthur White, NSU director of Jazz Studies. Its important to find a way to give back to your community, and were glad to assist NSUBA in this endeavor.

The new CD is a departure from the normal format, as it features new arrangements of the music of a single composer, trombonist Robin Eubanks. Widely considered as the premier jazz trombonist of his generation, Eubanks is a Grammy winner who tours with his own bands EB3 and Mental Images, as a member of the critically acclaimed Dave Holland Quintet and Big Band, and as a member of the SFJazz Collective. Eubanks has recorded several CDs as a leader and numerous projects with the Dave Holland groups, in addition to recordings with JJ Johnson, Michael Brecker, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Branford Marsalis, and numerous others.

The album features the NSU Jazz Ensemble, the flagship ensemble of the NSU Jazz Studies Program. The album debuts brand new arrangements written by White and NSU jazz alum Bradley Spears.

Were excited to have the NSU Jazz Ensemble back on the BA campus, and are very excited for the Broken Arrow community to hear this wonderful band. It will be an excellent to cap off our fundraising drive for the United Way, said Dr. Ed Huckeby, NSUBA vice president for Academic Affairs.

White thinks this new album is going to turn many heads and create new fans of NSU Jazz.

Robin really made the recording process special for all of us. I think the CD is the bands best work yet. Every year, they really rise to the occasion, said White. We are very excited for the Broken Arrow community to hear this terrific band.
