NSU Faculty, Staff, Students Participate at Oklahoma Academy of Science Meeting

TAHLEQUAH Faculty, staff and students from Northeastern State University recently participated in the Oklahoma Academy of Science Annual Fall Field Meeting held at Black Mesa State Park near Kenton, Okla. on Sept. 26-28.

Over 100 faculty, staff and students from state and private schools were represented during field trips in the areas of astronomy, aquatic biology, botany, entomology, geography, ichthyology, geology, mammalogy, ornithology and herpetology.

Field Meeting Director Dr. Kristen Baum, of the Oklahoma State University Department of Zoology, planned the annual excursion with assistance from Academy Executive Secretary Treasurer Dr. David Bass, of the University of Central Oklahoma.

Dr. Liz Bergey, of the University of Oklahoma, made a presentation on life in Thailand. Bergey recently complete a Fulbright fellowship in Thailand where she taught science courses and carried out research on aquatic invertebrates below containment structures with intermittent water flow. Dr. Loren Smith, chair of the OSU Department of Zoology, also made a presentation on Playas of the Western Plains. Smith spoke of the environmental importance of playas and argued for the need for preservation and restoration efforts.

The Academy is one of a very few in the country who hosts field meeting open to anyone throughout Oklahoma and surrounding states. The spring meeting is scheduled at Eufaula Sate Park. Additional information is available at oas.uco.edu
