Huckeby Receives ASCAPLUS Award

BROKEN ARROW The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers recently announced that Dr. Ed Huckeby, associate vice president for Academic Affairs at Northeastern State University Broken Arrow, is the recipient of a 2008-2009 ASCAPLUS Award in Concert Music.

In announcing these awards, ASCAP joins with NSU in supporting the growth and development of our nations musical future, said Marilyn Bergman, president and chairman of the ASCAP board. These awards reflect our continuing commitment to assist and encourage ASCAP composers.

The awards are granted by an independent panel and are based upon the unique prestige value of each writers catalog of original compositions, as well as recent performances.

Prior to his appointment at NSU, Huckeby served as arts administrator for Tulsa Ballet Theatre, Inc., and spent two decades as the Music Department chair and dean of the Graduate College at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He also taught instrumental music in public schools in Oklahoma for eight years, where his marching, concert and jazz bands won state and regional acclaim. During the course of his career, he has composed over 120 works for concert and marching bands.

He has performed as a horn player in a symphony orchestra, trumpet player in a jazz band, and provided bass guitar and vocals for a contemporary Christian quintet, as well as having served as a church organist and pianist.

Huckeby earned his bachelors degree in music education from East Central University in Ada, a masters degree in music education from the University of Oklahoma, and a doctorate in administration from Oklahoma State University, with additional study at the University of North Texas.

A well-respected author in the field of music education, Huckeby was selected as an Outstanding Young Man in America, is listed in the International Whos Who in Music, and was inducted into the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association Hall of Fame in 1996. He has created of 35 commissioned works, and regularly serves as a clinician, adjudicator and conductor for instrumental ensembles around the world.
