Mahan Selected To Make Presentations

BROKEN ARROW Northeastern State University Broken Arrows Melissa Mahan, associate dean of Student Affairs, will be sharing her expertise of working in higher education at several conferences in 2009.

Focusing on student leadership development, Mahan will present perceptions of NSUBA DELTA Leadership Academy graduates at the Academy of Human Resource Development International Research Conference in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

The AHRD Conference participants historically represent national university, nonprofits, governments and corporations from around the world, said Mahan. It is an honor to be among those chosen to present for these distinguished individuals.

The study, the result of focus group interviews with graduates from the past three years, focuses on the process of personal leadership development with adult learners and what they perceive as the most important aspects of leadership development. On behalf of the Oklahoma State University Virtual Reality Team, of which she is a member, Mahan will also make a second presentation at the conference on Gender Differences in Desktop Virtual Reality. The study reveals the differences gender has on using desktop virtual reality as a learning tool in the classroom.

Mahan and NSU graduate students Kristi Arnold and Melissa Rollins will present Creating Adult Learner Study Groups: Getting Commuter Students Involved at the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators: Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education Annual Conference scheduled from March 7-11 in Seattle, Wash.

The presentation will focus on the implementation and success of Adult Learner Study Groups implemented by the Office of Student Affairs at the Broken Arrow campus during the previous school year.

The presentation is a collaborative effort between Mahan, Arnold and Rollins, who are students in the Higher Education Administration and Student Personnel Services degree programs. NASPA Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education is the leading voice for student affairs administration, policy, and practice, and affirms the commitment of the student affairs profession to educating the whole student and integrating student life and learning.

Mahan was also selected to present Moral Courage: Leadership From The Inside Out at the American College Personnel Associations Annual Convention on March 28-April 1, 2009 in Washington, D.C. The presentation focuses on leadership development in adult learners and commuter students through the DELTA Leadership Academy.

The presentation is sponsored by the ACPA Commission for Commuter Students and Adult Learners. ACPA is the leading comprehensive student affairs association that advances student affairs and engages students in lifetime learning.
