Miss NSU 2008 Ashley Gharibvand crowns Michelle Bruffett as Miss NSU 2009 during the 46th annual Miss NSU Scholarship Pageant Thursday night.

TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State University student Michelle Bruffett, of McAlester, was crowned Miss NSU 2009 at the 46th annual Miss NSU Scholarship Pageant on Thursday, Nov. 20, at NSU's Center for Performing Arts.

Michelle's platform for the competition was the American Heart Association. She is a graduate of McAlester High School and is attending NSU as an accounting major. She is the daughter of Valarie and Timothy Bruffett. Michelle will represent NSU in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant.

Cassidy Wildermuth, of Pryor, was named first-runner up. Kendyl Sexton, of Apache, was second-runner up. DeeAnn Amlin, of Tahlequah, was third-runner up. Holly Rongey, of Jenks, was fourth-runner up. Dinah Hill, of Bixby, was voted Miss Congeniality.

Amber Burnett, of Ochelata, also competed in the pageant. The event was emceed by NSU senior Ryan Alsup. Miss Oklahoma 2008 Kelsey Cartwritght and Miss NSU 2008 Ashley Sheva Gharibvand performed at the event.

Judges for the pageant were Susanne Betz, David Anderson, Denise Deaton, Cheno Kennedy, Jeanne Whiteley, and Jerry Jackson.

The first Miss Northeastern State College was crowned in 1960. Nancy Wheat won by a vote of the student body and held the title for one year. In 1961, the first competition was held for the title. Carol Willoughby won the contest, which has been a Northeastern tradition ever since.
