NSU Offers Scholarships in Computer Science, Math
TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State University has scholarships available starting in Fall 2009 for students who are interested in Mathematics or Computer Science. The scholarships are available to entering freshmen and to students with 40 or more college credit hours.
Scholarship recipients will receive up to $8,000 per year for up to four years, with additional awards available for summer study. The award amount per year will be determined by the students level of financial need. Students must choose a major in Mathematics or Computer Science during their first year at NSU.
NSU Computer Science and Mathematics students are thoroughly prepared for a wide variety of careers or for graduate work,
said Dr. Rick Matzen, associate professor of Computer Science and the scholarship program coordinator. In addition to the financial awards, the scholarship students will get other valuable benefits including a faculty mentor to guide them through their four years at NSU and opportunities to participate in special academic, social, and career preparation activities.
Funding for the scholarship program is provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation that is intended to increase the number of college graduates in mathematics and the sciences. To be eligible for the NSU scholarships, applicants must major in Computer Science or Mathematics. Related disciplines such as Math Education and Information Science do not qualify under the guidelines of the program. Interested students should explore www.nsuok.edu/STEMscholars for information about NSUs Mathematics and Computer Science degree programs and careers in these disciplines.
Applicants must apply to NSU for Fall 2009 and must demonstrate financial need according to the results of their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). They should also demonstrate in their application that they are prepared to succeed in Mathematics or Computer Science at NSU. The best applicants will have a high school GPA of 3.5 or better, ACT scores in the 20s, positive references from teachers, and a high level of interest in mathematics or computer science.
Applications may be submitted starting March 1, 2009 and will be reviewed until all scholarships are awarded; students should file their FAFSA as soon as possible. For information on how to file the FAFSA, contact the NSU Office of Financial Aid at 918-444-3456. Students who already have the results of their FAFSA may contact the STEM Scholarship Coordinator to discuss financial eligibility for the STEM scholarships.
For application forms, instructions, and more information on the scholarship program, students should visit the website at www.nsuok.edu/STEMscholars or contact the STEM Scholarship Coordinator, Dr. Rick Matzen, by phone at 918-444-5846 or e-mail matzen@nsuok.edu. E-mail is best over semester and spring breaks; please include the word STEM and your last name in the subject line.
