Galaxy of Stars Series Returns in February

TAHLEQUAH A certified lunatic, the regional dances of Mexico, American Indian songs and a family of fiddlers will finish out the 23rd Annual Galaxy of Stars Series from the Sequoyah Institute at Northeastern State University.

The 2008-2009 season resumes on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tahlequah High School Performing Arts Center with Toms Kubnek, Certified Lunatic and Master of the Impossible.

Kubneks one-man show is equal parts comic brilliance, virtuosic vaudeville and irresistible charm. Hailed as the Sultan of Silly, Arduous Advocate of the Commonplace Miracle, Maestro of Subversive Ingenuity, Curer of Melancholia, Certified Lunatic and Master of the Impossible, Kubnek is the antidote to the blues and blahs.

Get a taste of the regional dances of Mexico on Thursday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Muskogee Civic Center with Ballet Folklorico Mexico. The show is sponsored by the Muskogee Arts Council.

Ballet Folklorico has been delighting audiences throughout North America for more than 30 years. U.S. and Mexican officials have recognized the troupe as one of the most exciting groups presenting authentic regional dances of Mexico. Decked out in lavish, traditional regalia featuring spectacular headdresses that reach a jaw-dropping six feet in length, Ballet Folklorico will take you on a tour of Mexico through the power of dance.

The Sequoyah Institute will bring Songs of the Spirit with Joanne Shenandoah to the Tahlequah High School Performing Arts Center on Thursday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m., in conjunction with the NSU Symposium on the American Indian.

Shenandoah has fulfilled the promise of her American Indian name, Tekaliwah-kwa (She Sings), as a Wolf Clan member of the Iroquois Confederacy Oneida Nation by winning a Grammy Award and 11 Native American Music Awards. She has collaborated and performed with Bruce Cockburn, Neil Young, Brian Kirkpatrick, Willie Nelson, Rita Coolidge and scores of others across the nation and around the world. Called one of the most acclaimed Native American singers of her time, by the Associated Press, Shenandoah will soothe your spirit and warm your heart through her music.

The 23rd Annual Galaxy of Stars Season will conclude on Saturday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. when The Hunt Family Fiddlers take the stage at the Tahlequah High School Performing Arts Center. The show is sponsored by Advantage Lifestyles Audiology.

The Hunt Family Fiddlers will charm, captivate and entertain you with their unique performance that blends Celtic, bluegrass, classical and pop music. This family of nine includes world ranked Irish step dances and award winning fiddlers and singers. From the moment they take the stage, you will be blown away b the amount of talent in this family.
