Clifford Finds Volunteer Work Rewarding

For nearly two decades, Dr. Craig Clifford has devoted his free time to helping families in need. For the past 18 years, Clifford has volunteered with Tahlequah Area Habitat for Humanity, Inc., giving his time, energy and leadership to help build homes for individuals and families who otherwise might never have the home-ownership opportunity.

The catalyst for the Tahlequah Area Habitat for Humanity, Inc. was George Fulk and the volunteer work in Coahoma, Miss., a very impoverished area on the Mississippi Delta. Nearly all the homes in this area needed to be replaced. It was an eye-opening experience to see what a group of volunteers could do with common interest and concerted effort. Fulk called upon his friends in the Tahlequah community to start an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International in the Tahlequah area. Clifford stepped up to the challenge and has been a volunteer ever since. He even served as president of the Tahlequah affiliate for 10 years.

Currently, Tahlequah Area Habitat for Humanity, Inc. has a home under construction, proudly referred to as House No. 15. It is located west of Tahlequah off Mud Valley Road. Keys to this home are expected to go to the family in May. Recipients of the volunteer built homes must qualify and be able to make monthly payments for the home. The payments are lower because the house was built by volunteers and there is no interest on the mortgages.

Over the years, many volunteer schedules have been tried and the group looks at innovative ways to get their homes built. They are strategic, determined and hard working to make sure homes are started and finished at optimal times of the year. Volunteers meet one weekend per month with a strong focus on tasks to complete during that time.

Volunteers are always welcome. Visit the website tahlequahhabitat.org for upcoming events, driving direction to House # 15, work schedules and how to get involved in a feel good project.
