Three From NSUBA Honored At MLK Leadership Luncheon

BROKEN ARROW Three members of the Northeastern State University community were recently honored at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2009 Leadership Luncheon Living the Dream: Standing Together Transforming Lives Through Education on Friday, Jan. 16 at the Greenwood Cultural Center in Tulsa.
Representatives from universities in the Tulsa metro area honored Dr. Allyson Watson, assistant professor of Educational Foundations and Leadership, Nadia Hall, advisement center coordinator, Asia Hongo, Office of Student Affairs graduate assistant, and nine others whose work represents Kings dream of unity.
A determined, compassionate and a dedicated leader, Watson was the youngest African American to graduate with a Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma. She began her career in education 12 years ago and has been committed to making a difference in the lives of students, urban schools, and teachers that she encounters. Watson is a Gates Millennium Scholar alumnus and serves on the board of scholarship reviewers for the United Negro College Fund and the Gates Foundation. She believes that her job as an educator is to empower others to believe in themselves and their capacity to achieve their goals.
A 1996 graduate from Cascia Hall Preparatory School, Hall earned her Bachelor of Elementary Education degree from the University of Tulsa in 2001 and her masters in School Counseling from TU in 2003. She has emerged as a leader and role model in the Enrollment Management department at NSU. Through her insight and determination, the Advisement Center was established as a one-stop shop for students to receive admission to the university, academic advisement, financial aid counseling and career services.
A graduate Memorial High School, Hongo received her bachelors degree in Psychology from NSU in 2008. She is pursuing a masters degree in school counseling. Hongo was instrumental in the planning and preparation of the MLK activities on the NSUBA campus. She is an active member of the Multicultural Student Coalition and plays an integral part of the student activities planning and development on our campus.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Awards Luncheon was a collaborative effort between the universities in the Tulsa metro area, include NSU Broken Arrow, Tulsa Community College, Oklahoma State University Tulsa, the University of Oklahoma Tulsa, Langston University Tulsa and Oral Roberts University.
This group brings together local representatives from higher education institutions in the Tulsa area to work collectively to develop activities and programs in dedication to the life, memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
