National Teacher of the Year Featured Speaker At NSU Celebration of Teaching

TAHLEQUAH The National Teacher of the Year Michael Geisen will be the featured speaker at the 2009 Celebration of Teaching at Northeastern State University, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19 in the NET Auditorium. Oklahoma Teacher of the Year Heather Sparks is also scheduled to speak.

The event, for current teachers and future educators, offers workshops exploring new ways of teaching and offers the chance for educators to share new ideas about teaching and learning.

Geisen earned his Master of Arts in Teaching from Southern Oregon University in 2001. He taught university level courses at the University of Washington, and has also taught at North Middle School and Grants Pass High School. He is currently at 7th and 8th grade science teacher at Crook County Middle School.

Focusing on the current system of accountability in American schools, Geisen will discuss how a broader view and approach that recognizes students as creative beings and not just statistics, is needed.

The Celebration of Teaching is sponsored by the NSU Minority Teacher Recruitment Task Force, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society for Education.
