NSU Career Services offers for-credit career exploration course
(Tahlequah, Okla.)-- Deciding on a major is sometimes the hardest decision that a student must make during their college career. Opportunities for career exploration allow students to get a feel for real-world experiences in a particular job field.
This essential career exploration is precisely the aim of a new course being offered to NSU students with the courses slogan being, To explore yourself. To explore careers. To make decisions. To set goals for your career path.
Career Readiness & Exploration, LAS 1811, will be offered in a weekly format, beginning onTuesday, Nov. 10. The class will take place everyTuesdayfrom3:30 to 5:30 p.m.untilDec. 10. The course will be blended, utilizing Blackboard, and will count as 1 credit hour, pass/fail.
Taught by Jodi Jones, a career counselor and internship specialist in the Career Services department, the course is geared toward undecided majors, and focuses on building self-awareness.
We (at Career Services) created a task force in conjunction with Enrollment Services because we really saw the need to look deeper at retention. We lose too many students who don't know what to major in, Jones said.
This course will hopefully help these students move forward in the right direction according to the careers they find they want to pursue.
Students can expect lots of hands-on, immersive activities. For many, the multitude of self-assessment surveys that make up a portion of the class homework will hopefully lead to the discovery of a career path.
Through the course, students will also be given an interviewing assignment of a professional in their career choice. Jones hopes that through this interview process the students are also able to gain a mentor.
We hope to give students an idea for options to explore. We plan to have speakers and possibly Human Resource professionals to explain what employers are looking for in new hires, Jones said.
The course is currently open and students can enroll at any time. For more information, contact Jodi Jones with Career Services at 918-444-3116 or emailjones142@nsuok.edu.
