Sequoyah Institute Performing Arts Series kicks off with Chicago Tap Theatre – Sept. 24

(Tahlequah, Okla.)-- Hailing from the Windy City, Chicago Tap Theatre (CTT) will kick off the Sequoyah Institutes 30th season of the Performing Arts Series with a shuffle and a stomp. CTT will bring its TAP Out Loud show to Northeastern State University along with a free master class.

Promising a celebration of tap dance and live music from the 1920s to now, the audience will enjoy historical pieces from the past, to the innovative and compelling original work for which the company is known.

The performance is Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the NSU Center for Performing Arts, 605 N. Grand Ave.

We just got back from seeing Chicago Tap Theatre showcase in Kansas City and our audience is in for a treat, Dr. Anita Thompson, executive director of the Sequoyah Institute said. Their choreography is fun and creative and their tapping is so clean. They are amazing.

The Chicago Tap Theatre was founded in 2002 by choreographer Mark Yonally, known for his successful career dancing in the United States and Europe both as a member of an ensemble and as a solo artist.

Within its first two years, CTT was able to announce its first self-produced, three-season show. Since then, CTT has recorded tracks with the rock band Polyphonic Spree and also performed in settings such as Green Mill, the Jazz Dance World Festival, Lollapalooza and the New York Musical Theatre Festival.

A master class is available from5:30to6:30 p.m.for ages 12 and older with at least three years of tap experience. The class is free, however, reservations must be made in advance. Thompson said the class will be held right on the stageprior to the performance. Space is limited for the master class, so reservations are encouraged.

I was thrilled that CTT's Director Mark Yonally wanted to do a master class for us. Participants will get a chance to learn from one of the best, Thompson said.
