ISDC to host metacognition workshops aimed at faculty, staff and students

On Monday, Sept. 28, at 3:30 p.m. in Webb Auditorium on the Tahlequah campus, the Indigenous Scholar Development Center will host metacognition expert Dr. Saundra Y. McGuire for a student-focused workshop titled, Metacognition: The Key to Successful Learning.

The topic of discussion, metacognition, is defined as the awareness and understanding of ones own thought processes. The workshop will help students learn to move from a Fixed Intelligence Mindset to a Growth Intelligence Mindset.

At NSU, we all want to help students succeed in meeting their educational goals, Becky Clovis, coordinator for scholar development with the ISDC said.

We spend a lot of time at the ISDC analyzing obstacles that interfere with student success. Students often enter higher education with poorly conceived ideas of how to study, how long to study, and even what they can accomplish through effective studying. This mindset is what Dr. McGuire considers the Fixed Intelligence Mindset, and it causes them to hold self-limiting beliefs that chronically lower their expectations of success due to their lack of confidence in their own potential.

Clovis hopes that students will be receptive to adopting effective learning strategies from Dr. McGuires presentation that will empower them and build self-efficacy, especially in the learning environment.

Students on the Muskogee and Broken Arrow campuses will also be able to view the presentation via ITV from the Administrative Services Building, room 215 on the Broken Arrow campus and from the Synar Building, room 141 on the Muskogee campus. Students attending the sessions will receive an ISDC backpack that includes a flash drive and various educational school supplies.

Faculty and Staff

McGuire will also present three sessions for NSU faculty and staff members on Tuesday, Sept. 29 from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m., 11 to 12:30 p.m. and 2 to 3:30 p.m. Faculty and staff in attendance will be entered in a drawing for copies of Dr. McGuires new book, Teach Students How to Learn, that will be released in October.

The presentation will take place in the Webb Building, room 614 on the Tahlequah campus and will be available via ITV to Broken Arrow in the Business and Technology Building, room 226, and to Muskogee in the Synar Building, room 141.

The presentations will have a primary focus of exploring effective learning strategies, encompassing every discipline and degree, with special emphasis in the areas of STEM, psychology, education, student motivation, student advisement, student academic success and retention.

This is a tremendous opportunity for NSU faculty and staff to hear Dr. McGuire present and reinforce strategies, techniques and pivotal information with the potential to bolster the strong culture of learning and discovery that already exists at our university, Clovis said.

We have lofty goals for this series of workshops. For those students who internalize and implement Dr. McGuires strategies, we expect the outcomes to be improved academic performance with more students successfully completing their college degrees. We expect this opportunity to be of great personal value, transforming them into better-educated graduates.
