Time to Apply for NSU Scholarships in Computer Science, Math

TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State University has scholarships available starting in Fall 2009 for students who are interested in Mathematics or Computer Science. The scholarships are available to entering freshmen and to students who already have 40 or more college credit hours.

Scholarship applications received by mid-April will receive first consideration; applications received after that will be accepted and reviewed until all scholarships are awarded. The most time sensitive part of the application process is filing the FAFSA, having the results sent to NSU, and when NSU requests follow-up information send this in promptly (including copies of tax returns if not already provided).

For information on how to file the FAFSA contact the NSU Office of Financial Aid at 918-444-3456. Students who already have their FAFSA results may contact the STEM Scholarship Coordinator to discuss financial eligibility for the STEM scholarships.
Scholarship recipients will receive up to $8,000 per year for up to four years, with additional awards available for summer study. The award amount per year will be determined by the students level of financial need. Students will choose a major in Mathematics or Computer Science during their first year at NSU.

NSU Computer Science and Mathematics students are thoroughly prepared for a wide variety of careers or for graduate work, said Dr. Rick Matzen, associate professor of Computer Science and the scholarship program coordinator. In addition to the financial awards, the scholarship students will get other valuable benefits including a faculty mentor to guide them through their four years at NSU and opportunities to participate in special academic, social, and career preparation activities.

Funding for the scholarship program is provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation that is intended to increase the number of college graduates in mathematics and the sciences. To be eligible for the NSU scholarships, applicants must major in Computer Science or Mathematics. Related disciplines such as Math Education and Information Science do not qualify under the guidelines of the program. Interested students should explore the web site listed below for information about NSUs Mathematics and Computer Science degree programs and careers in these disciplines.

Applicants must apply to NSU for Fall 2009 and must demonstrate financial need according to the results of their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). They should demonstrate in their application that they are prepared to succeed in Mathematics or Computer Science at NSU. The best applicants will have a GPA of 3.25 or higher, ACT scores in the 20s, positive references from teachers, and a high level of interest in mathematics or computer science.
