Dr. Lahoma Schultz Honored As NSU AIAA 2009 Distinguished Native American Alumnus

TAHLEQUAH The Northeastern State University American Indian Alumni Association recently presented Dr. Lahoma Schultz, of Muskogee, with the 2009 Distinguished Native American Alumni Award during the 37th Annual Symposium on the American Indian held at NSU.

Schultz, nominated by Bobby Schultz, earned her bachelors and masters degrees at NSU before completing a Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. As a psychologist for the Veterans Administration in Muskogee, she counsels soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as other veterans. She is involved with the Indian Education committees at Dwar, Ryan and Union Public Schools, and is a published author.

Schultz helped organize the first Symposium on the American Indian at Northeastern in 1973, and was selected as one of the NSU Centurions during the NSU Founders Day Celebration on March 6. She is 7/8 Muscogee (Creek) and 1/8 Seminole.

Nominees for the award were solicited from the public, and were required to be graduates of NSU and members of a federally-recognized American Indian tribe. Nominees who had made important contributions to their tribal, local or professional communities were considered for the award the by NSU AIAA Award Committee, and the final selections was announced at the award ceremony during the Symposium on the American Indian.

A call for nominations for the 2010 Distinguished Native American Alumni Award will be announced at the beginning of the spring 2010 academic semester.
