Enrollment Open for NSU Centennial Camps 4 Kids

TAHLEQUAHAs part of Northeastern State University's ongoing Centennial celebration, the College of Liberal Arts is excited to offer four, weeklong camps in July for area students.

"We are so pleased to have the opportunity to offer children in Tahlequah and surrounding areas the chance to do something new this summer. Its so nice to provide a safe, fun environment to stimulate them during their vacation, said Cathy Turner, adviser to camps.

The four camps are broken down into different areas of interestscience, performing arts, bookworm and visual arts.

The science camp, which runs June 29 through July 3, is exploring the world around us through hands-on activities.

"At a time when going green has become so popular and necessary, it is important to begin teaching kids at a younger age the things they can do to help preserve our planet, said Turner.

The performing arts camp, July 6 through July 10, encompasses everything from acting techniques to diction and costuming. At the end of the week students are presenting a variety show style performance where parents can come and see what their children learned.

The bookworm camp, July 13 through July 17, is exploring young adult fiction with an emphasis on the Harry Potter series.

"This camp will culminate with a special viewing of the new Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, said Turner.

The visual arts camp, July 20 through July 24, provides students the opportunity to express themselves through various artistic applications. In addition to the hands-on aspect, students are also going to learn about art history and local art culture.

Camp teachers are members of the NSU community as well as outside professionals who are excited to be able to help celebrate the centennial through this community outreach project.

"We are looking forward to having so many young faces on campus this summer. Each one of the camps will be unique and engaging, said Dr. Dana Eversole, associate professor of mass communication and co-chair of the Centennial Events Committee.

Camps are available to students entering the third through eighth grade this fall. The price is $125 per child, which includes breakfast, lunch and a snack. The camps will run for five days each from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Drop off and pick up will be in the NSU University Center.
