Georgia-Pacific Awards Scholarships to NSU Students

Five Northeastern State University students were recently awarded $1,000 scholarships from the Georgia-Pacific Foundation to use for the 2009 Fall semester. Recipients are from left to right, Stephen Ashmore, Zachary Steelman, Matthew Stowe, Adam Ranallo and Dennis Jones.

TAHLEQUAHNortheastern State University and Georgia-Pacific recently held a luncheon to award scholarships to five NSU students majoring in disciplines related to industry, technology and engineering.

Recipients for the scholarship award and their major area of study are Stephen Ashmore, Computer Science; Dennis Jones, Safety; Adam Ranallo, Safety; Zachary Steelman, Information Science; and Matthew Stowe, Computer Science. Each received a $1,000 college scholarship from the Georgia-Pacific Foundation to use for the Fall 2009 semester.

Every spring, Georgia-Pacific funds five scholarships for deserving NSU students. Winners are selected based on criteria that includes majoring in a discipline related to industry, technology and engineering; having a 3.0 or better GPA; and demonstrating financial need. Students are also required to submit a one-page, double-spaced essay stating why they should receive the scholarship.

Georgia-Pacific has been funding this scholarship for several years, and we want them to know how much we appreciate their support of our students and higher education, said Gordon Shamblin, NSU instructor of Computer Science.

Dr. Mark Nelson, NSU associate professor of Technology, chairs the Georgia-Pacific Scholarship committee comprised of representatives from the areas of Technology, Information Systems and Computer Science.

We really appreciate what Georgia-Pacific has done for our students and our departments. We hope that this is something that benefits both the students and Georgia-Pacific, said Nelson.
