NSU debate team shines at recent tournament
(Tahlequah, Okla.)-- The Northeastern State University Speech and Debate team won big again in their last tournament of the semester. NSU student Gemini Creason placed first in Critical Analysis, third in Impromptu speaking, fourth in After Dinner Speaking and fifth in Program of Oral Interpretation.
Creason also qualified and took first place in the tournaments Penath award, which is given to selected competitors who compete in a selection of five events.
The swing tournament took place on Dec. 4, 5 and 6 at Cameron University in Lawton, while West Texas A&M hosted the second half of the Christmas Classic. Schools from all over Missouri, Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma participated.
Another student, Anthony Woodall took first in Impromptu and fourth in Informative Speaking. Connor White placed fourth in Poetry and won Top Novice. The small but talented team did so well on the first day of competing they brought home the Top Oklahoma School Award, which means out of all the colleges in Oklahoma, NSU placed highest.
Sunday, Dec. 6 saw the second round of competition and the team once again, brought glory to NSU. Woodall placed first in Extemporaneous Speaking, second in Impromptu, fifth in After Dinner Speaking and sixth in Poetry. White placed third in Poetry and once again took Top Novice. Creason placed second in After Dinner Speaking and Critical Analysis. The team placed third in individual awards. Creason and teammate Brooke McCleary were also semi-finalists in Program of Oral Interpretation.
The team, while only having four competitors, continuously brings back countless awards for NSU. Their hard work throughout the semester has paid off tremendously and they look forward to bringing home more trophies and medals for display, Kendrea James, the teams graduate assistant director said.
