Musical Showcases the Work of Irving Berlin

TAHLEQUAH Follow the journey of a single piano with one sour key through four generations of singers and dancers who have performed with and around it in Irving Berlins I Love A Piano, the second show in the Sequoyah Institutes 23rd Annual Galaxy of Stars Series at Northeastern State University.

I Love A Piano, sponsored by Go Ye Village, takes the stage at the NSU Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

This is a fully-staged musical with singing, dancing, costumes, set and a storyline, said Megan White, director of the Sequoyah Institute. We are excited to be bringing this top-notch production from New York City to Tahlequah. When the lights go down and the show starts, you might as well be in any theatre on Broadway. We cant wait for our community to experience this performance.

The story traces the life of the piano from a music store to a parlor in the 1910s, through a speakeasy in the 1920s to the New York City street just after the Stock Market crash of 1929, to a movie theater and later dance hall in the 1930s, through a Stage Door Canteen during and after World War II, to a junkyard in the early 1950s, before finally coming to rest at a summer stock company where auditions are being held for the theaters production of Annie Get Your Gun in the late 1950s.

Throughout it all, hear the music of one the greatest composers in American history, Irving Berlin a man who Jerome Kern described by saying Irving Berlin has no place in American music He is American Music!

Over 60 of Berlins classic songs are showcased in the two-hour production, including Puttin on the Ritz, White Christmas, Anything You Can Do, Theres No Business Like Show Business and God Bless America.

Tickets for Irving Berlins I Love A Piano are $20 for adults, $18 for NSU alumni, $16 for NSU employees, $14 for senior citizens, $12 for groups of 10 or more, $10 for students and children, and $5 for NSU students. To purchase tickets, contact the NSU Box Office at 918-458-2075.
