Special coverage by NSU Intern Laura Butler
You don't have to travel to the other side of the world to experience Chinese culture. Northeastern State University Broken Arrow and the Confucius Institute are bringing China to you.
A course in traditional Chinese calligraphy will begin on Monday, August 3. The classes run from 1pm to 4pm and will be taught by Cai Qi, Chinese Language Instructor at Yunnan University. The classes take place in the Confucius Room in Building E of the BA campus.
The first session will instruct students on the proper way of holding a brush and the correct posture for writing calligraphy and will feature Chinese traditional music. The second session on August 4 teaches the basic strokes and Chinese painting. The third session on August 5 will go over structure, paper cutting and introduce the Chinese character that means happiness.
The fourth session on August 10 will teach brush movement and include copying characters from a pattern book. The final session on August 11 is devoted to works appreciation and creation. The course is $19 and includes all materials with the exception of an inkwell or plastic container for dipping their brush.
The Confucius Institute at NSU promotes educational exchange and cooperation between the US and the Peoples Republic of China. Confucius Institutes educational resources provide knowledge of Chinese language, culture, history, politics, economics, sociology, and philosophy through special events, guest speakers, lecture series, presentations, seminars and classes.
The China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (HanBan) and NSU is in the process of jointly establishing the Confucius Institute as a non-degree granting entity. Through a grant, Hanban will provide library materials and resources for hosting visiting faculty members from China. Materials will be housed and courses provided in the Confucius Room.
Hanban will also provide support for community outreach and development of non-degree programs related to China and Chinese language studies.
