Northeastern State University Wins Top State Communicator Awards
Anderson, Matue lead OCPRA wins; Henshaw, Zehnder garner additional merit from international and national organizations
Members of the Office of Communications and Marketing at Northeastern State University collected nine awards during the Oklahoma College Public Relations Association annual conference at Quartz Mountain State Lodge in July.
Aaron Anderson, video projects coordinator, and Ross Maute, graphic designer, each led two of the four projects that took first place among colleges and universities throughout the state. Also recognized for their work on award winning projects were Pete Henshaw, university photographer; Ryan Jensen, graphic designer; Sean Kennedy, media relations coordinator; Jennifer Zehnder, assistant director of Communications and Marketing; and Nancy Garber, director of Communications and Marketing.
Following the official business meeting at the conference, Garber took the helm as president of OCPRA for the 2009-2010 academic year.
OCPRA was founded in 1969 to provide networking opportunities and honor the creative imagination of its members in their marketing and public relations efforts. Professional communicators from public and private institutions of higher education throughout Oklahoma submitted more than 500 entries for this years competition.

In addition, Henshaw brought home an Honorable Mention award in the Personal Vision category from the University Photographers Association of Americas recent annual print competition in Jamestown, New York. The UPAA was founded in 1961 and includes photographers from across the United States, Canada, Australia, and Israel. The same photo, a close-up photograph of a leaf covered in rainwater that was manipulated in Photoshop, earned Henshaw the first place award in the organizations monthly competition for the summer period in 2008.
On another note, the American Horse Publications (AHP) recently awarded Zehnder a First Place in the Personality Profile (circulation over 20,000) category, for her Barrel Horse News freelance feature, Balancing Act. The former associate editor for Western Horseman, also contributed the photography to Well-Heeled, a WH feature that won Honorable Mention in the One- or Two-Page Spread Editorial Design category. This year, more than 800 entries were submitted for AHP awards in 66 categories. AHP is a non-profit association established in 1970 to promote better understanding and communications within the equine publishing industry. Its members include equine-related publications, professionals, students, organizations and businesses. In addition to the tangible benefits, members reap the rewards of networking and establishing valuable friendships and contacts with other equine industry professionals.
