College Prep Focus of The College Encounter at Northeastern State

Local high school seniors had their first college encounter on the Northeastern State University campus July 30. Seventeen students from the Class of 2010 at Chouteau, Coweta, Hilldale, Inola, Jay, Kansas, Keys, Tahlequah and Wagoner joined NSU staffers from the Educational Talent Search program for The College Encounter event which focuses on intense college preparation.

The group updated their scholarship profiles on Fastweb, created their resumes, completed the F.A.F.S.A. Forecaster and applied for their F.A.F.S.A. PIN, registered for the ACT with a fee waiver and took the Strengthsquest assessment and an Accuplacer exam.

The day ended with a four-course formal dinner accompanied by an etiquette lesson conducted by Jennifer Chessmore from the OSU Upward Bound program. Good table manners werent the only items up for discussion. Chessmore addressed appropriate behaviors in other areas of life.

The Educational Talent Search program serves 600 students from area middle and high schools. ETS provides college and career counseling and helps students recognize their strengths through educational, cultural, and adventure activities. The NSU-ETS program is a federally-funded TRIO program through the U.S. Department of Education.
