NSU Tennis Team Scores ITA Accolades

Northeastern States tennis athletes continue to make the grade both on an off the court. The team was recently honored as an ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) All-Academic Team for 2009. The RiverHawks also had four student-athletes named ITA Scholar Athletes in the NCAA Division II category.

Karolina Cichon, Zuzanna Osinska, Michaela Romanova and Agata Skorupska of Poland were honored with the award, which honors student-athletes who excel on the court and in the classroom. All four will return to the RiverHawk lineup this season.

We were the only team in the Lone Star Conference to have four individuals named ITA Scholar Athletes, said head coach Ron Cox. We would have had five, but she was a freshman and did not qualify.

To be one of only two teams in the region to be recognized is quite an honor. I am very proud of these young ladies who have represented Northeastern State in such a tremendous way.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2008 and spring 2009).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).

As a team, Northeastern States overall grade-point average was 3.56. The RiverHawks finished the 2009 season with a duals mark of 19-4, which included a runner-up finish in the NCAA Division II Womens Tennis South Central Regional.
