Second Century Surge: Enrollment, Credit Hours Increase at Northeastern State

Economic downturn, proactive recruitment efforts help University grow mission

The second century at Northeastern State University is off to a booming start as enrollment figures for the Fall 2009 semester show increases across the board. University officials report a 5.5 percent surge in total enrollment for the fall 2009 semester as 9,318 students take classes at the historic institution. Freshmen, graduate, individual campus enrollment and credit-hour production figures have seen increases as well.

"Northeastern entered into this recruitment cycle optimistic that we would see an increase in our enrollment as people were seeking other opportunities because of the economic downturn. The University was proactive with its recruitment efforts, and posted significant gains in overall enrollment as well as graduate and freshmen students. We also posted a dramatic increase in the number of credit hours in the students are carrying," said Mark Kinders, vice president for University Relations.

"An important component was our NSUanswers.com web site. People with questions about college could go to that web site and ask a question that would be answered within 24 hours. We had more than 8,000 visits and visitors asked over 1,100 questions, which influenced their decision that Northeastern is the avenue to a better life."
