Northeastern State University Library to Host Census Workshop

Northeastern State University Library to Host Census Workshop

by NSU Staff Writer Dustin Woods

A workshop to prepare people for the United States Census will be held Sept. 10 in the John Vaughan Library at Northeastern State University.

Getting Ready for the 2010 Census, presented by Steve Beleu of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, features materials and discussion on organizing and preparing for the upcoming census, said Susan Woitte, NSU instructor of Library Services, Government Information.

Every year Steve offers a list of free workshops on government resources which he will bring to our libraries, Woitte said. We select the workshops we think will be most valuable to the NSU and Tahlequah Communities.

Getting Ready for the 2010 Census runs Sept. 10 in Library room 105 from 14 p.m. and is free of charge. It is the first government workshop at the John Vaughan Library this academic year.

Absolutely expect more workshops, Woitte said. We have hosted at least one government workshop every academic year, and this year there will be at least two. In addition to this Census workshop, we are also offering a workshop on federal agency American Indian Web sites on December 3.

As a depository, the John Vaughan Library receives print, CD, DVD, map, poster, microform and other forms of government publications for free in exchange for providing access to the media and research assistance with the materials.

The workshop objectives include learning to use the American Community Survey and American Fact Finder web sites to find statistics for Oklahoma. It will teach techniques the attendees can use when the much anticipated 2010 Census data begins to release into these databases, Woitte said.

Census data can influence policy-making at all levels of government.

The statistics are some of the most reliable and they can help with business planning, health information, social studies and are very important to many people right now because they fully describe the area we live in for grant applications, Woitte said.

The workshop is free and open to NSU faculty, staff, students and the Tahlequah community. Those interested may call Susan Woitte at 918-444-3246 or e-mail woitte@nsuok.edu to register.
