Financial Health, Planning Focus of Womens Financial Security Seminar at NSUBA

By NSU Staff Writer Eric Covey

There are over 9 million female-owned businesses in America, generating more than $2.3 trillion in annual revenue. According to the National Foundation for Women Business Owners, women are starting new companies at twice the rate of men. Women hold over 50 percent of the wealth in America...

Financial health, estate planning, investments and a host of other financial topics are up for discussion during the Second Womens Financial Security Seminar held Oct. 23 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Northeastern State University Broken Arrow campus.

Hosted by State Farm Insurance and NSU, the event offers workshops in various financial areas, including estate planning and investing.

Featured speakers and presenters include Kathy Taylor, City of Tulsa Mayor; Karen Larsen, 2News anchor; Rendi Black, Vice President of Agency, and Margie Southard, Vice President of Operations, for State Farm Insurance; as well as NSU faculty Julia Kwok and Dr. Denise Deason-Toyne.

An associate professor of Business Law, Dr. Denise Deason-Toyne teaches business law, estate planning and personal finance and is a member of the CFP board. Toyne will discuss estate planning at the seminar, including wills, probate, and power of attorney topics.

Many women at some point in their lives will become single, whether by divorce or the death of their spouse, and must be able to financially take care of themselves, said Toyne. The younger they start their education on planning financially, the much better off they're going to be.

Assistant Finance Professor Julie Kwok brings her expertise in investment principles and portfolio management to the conference. Her topics include how to secure financial health, financial control and planning, and how to succeed in investments.

Last year, the women left with a better understanding of their financial situations, shared Kwok. This conference is for women who enjoy unique challenges.

Whether you're planning for retirement, or learning the fundamentals of investing, its important for all women to consider this seminar a life-changing event.

Regular admission to the event is $25, $15 for NSU students. A plate lunch will be served. Registration for the event begins at 8:30 a.m. and will continue until noon.
