38th Annual Symposium of the American Indian Takes Shape

Plans continue to solidify for the 38th Annual Symposium on the American Indian, organized by NSUs Center for Tribal Studies.

Preliminary activities begin April 12, 2010, with the full schedule running April 14 through 17. This years theme is Oklahoma Fancy Dance.

We want to feature the creative and innovative initiatives in which Oklahoma Tribes are involved, said Dr. Phyllis Fife, director of the Center for Tribal Studies. we've invited presenters from an array of different tribal groups.

Scheduled speakers include Dr. Henryetta Mann, president of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal College at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, and Vanessa Jennings, Kiowa artist and traditionalist. Jennings is the granddaughter of the late Stephen Mopope, one of the Kiowa Five painters whose murals decorate the walls in Seminary Hall.

Fife specifically highlighted the involvement of the Oklahoma Native Language Association, where we discuss ways of approaching American Indian language revitalization. Lead faculty for the two-day language seminar, include Dr. Akira Yamamoto, anthropologist, linguist and Professor Emeritus from the University of Kansas.
