Students from Around the State Gather to Discuss Sustainable Campuses and Communities, Clean Energy Economy
First of its kind summit attended by Oklahoma college and high school students
The ReEnergize Oklahoma Youth Summit is a statewide youth gathering on clean energy, sustainability and climate change. A day of inspiration, learning and networking with other students from around the state to foster sustainable campuses and communities.
The summit takes place Saturday November 21st, 2009 at the University of Central Oklahoma from 9AM 4PM.
At the summit, 75 students from around Oklahoma will learn how to become better leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Some of Oklahoma's most influential experts, thinkers and doers on energy and the environment will answer students questions, and help them take ideas back to campus.
With the rising costs of oil imports, peak oil, climate change, and other environmental degradation my generation faces a tremendous challenge, but its also an opportunity to ensure that generations to come live on a safer planet powered by clean energy. With our help, Oklahoma could play a huge part in that, said Whitney Pearson, co-founder of ReEnergize Oklahoma, a graduate of Claremore high school and the University of Oklahoma.
Summit organizers hope a new energized network of Oklahoma energy and environmental advocates emerges that can join our legislators, city council members, business owners and ordinary citizens in building the clean energy economy.
It's just clear to me that we can do much better than coal and oil from the Middle East, we can produce healthier foods that travel fewer miles to get to our tables, build infrastructure that supports sustainable transportation, and build a stronger economy that creates jobs through energy efficiency and renewable development, said Blake Parks, Oklahoma State student and President of ECO-OSU.
The event is sponsored by Sierra Club Oklahoma Chapter, Chesapeake Energy, UCO, Center for Energy Matters, Bergey Wind Power, the Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Environment Program at OU, OG&E, OurEarth, Northeastern State University, and Anglin Public Relations.
