NSU Speech and Debate Team brings championship home
(Tahlequah, Okla.)-- The Northeastern State University Speech and Debate team won big again, this time at the Southern Forensic Championship tournament in Shreveport, Louisiana on Jan. 28 and 29.
The team competed against schools representing the southern region of the U.S., from Mississippi State University to William Carey.
"The tournament for the southern championship was a great experience for our team to compete against students we usually don't see on our circuit," said Kendrea James, a coaching assistant for the team.
While NSUs team was the smallest with just four competing members;Anthony Woodall, Gemini Creason, Brooke McClary and Connor White, they took home 13 awards and placed third overall in Individual Event Sweepstakes.
Placing third in Individual Events really speaks to how competitive the NSU speech team is this year. The students work really hard and I'm glad to see their work being rewarded at competitions, said Dr. Kristopher Copeland, director of the competitive speech team.
Team member Gemini Creason said she never imagined their small team would conquer such big competitions.
It just goes to show that determination and willpower can take you far, Creason said.
The competition season begins to wind down for the team but they continue to accelerate and achieve more at every tournament. As they gear up for their state competition, many students on the team are already focusing on next years events and topics.
The Speech and Debate team looks forward to their two-day upcoming competition onFeb. 26 and 27at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate State Tournament.
