NSU AISES Students Receive Honor at National Conference

TAHLEQUAH - Seventeen members of the NSU American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) Chapter and three sponsors attended the 23rd Annual AISES Conference in Albuquerque, NM, November 15-18, 2001. The trip was sponsored by the NSU Center for Tribal Studies, the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council (Councilor Stephanie Wickliffe-Shepherd), and Lucent Technology.

Approximately 2,000 American Indian college students and corporate representatives attended this years conference whose theme was Ancient Wisdom Advancing Modern Science & Technology. The conference provided academic and professional workshops, a corporate sponsored career fair and a scholarship awards banquet.

The NSU AISES Chapter received the honor of being selected as Runner Up Chapter of the Year out of 160 college chapters in the nation. The students were recognized and received a plaque at the awards banquet. Six individual NSU AISES members were also honored at the awards banquet for receiving scholarships. They were: Kendra Fish, Glenpool junior; Lance Fishinghawk, Stilwell junior; Daniel Howard, Tahlequah senior; Lisa Phillips, Tahlequah senior; Laura Sawney, Tahlequah junior; and Laura Wilson, Morris sophomore. Jeremy Marshall, Tahlequah senior, was elected Region IV AISES Representative by his AISES peers.

AISES is a national non-profit organization which nurtures building of community by bridging science and technology with traditional Native values. AISES helps American Indian students prepare for careers in science, technology, engineering and business by providing scholarships and meaningful summer internships with federal agencies. The NSU AISES Chapter is sponsored by the Center for Tribal Studies.
