NSU Jazz Band I Receives "Superior" Ratings

TAHLEQUAH The Northeastern State Universitys Jazz Band I performed Friday, April 18, at the Wichita Jazz Festival (Wichita State University-Kansas). This festival hosts high school and college jazz big bands and small groups from surrounding states who perform for ratings given by a panel of expert jazz educators and performers. The NSU Jazz Band I, led by NSU Director of Jazz Studies Will Campbell, received unanimous superior ratings and Special Recognition for Outstanding Musicianship awards for Bobby Asher (trumpet), Jason French (piano), B.J. OShea (bass), and Jeremy Grodhaus (drums). This ensemble has been awarded the unanimous superior ratings honor each time that they have competed at this event (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003). Festival adjudicator Bryce Luty commented that, This band is very mature; so
sensitive to the jazz style. I am so impressed with the level of playing in all sections.

As always, the band performed well at the festival, said Campbell. After not participating in last years festival, it was great to represent NSU again with high marks. I am proud of their work and honored to have them as students. This year the NSU Jazz Band I has performed with world renowned musicians such as saxophonist Jim Snidero, guitarist Pat Kelley, and trumpet artist Scott Wendholt.
