NSU Repertory Company Receives $300,000 Grant for Centennial Celebration
The Oklahoma Centennial Commission announced the approval
of the Project Application of Har-Ber Village Museum for a 2007 Centennial
Celebration. This northeastern Oklahoma celebration will be highlighted
with a Centennial Showcase production by the Northeastern State
University River City Players.
NSU will receive $300,000 for their part in the Centennial
project. Monies will be used for script development, sets, costumes, sound
and general production expenses.
"We are so excited to get in on the ground floor of the Centennial
Celebration," said Dr.
Kathryn Robinson, NSU Dean of Arts and Letters. "This project will
not only serve northeastern Oklahoma, but will impact the whole state
with messages about where we've been, where we are, and where we are going
as Oklahomans."
Tens of millions of dollars in projects were proposed as Oklahoma begins the countdown to its 100th birthday in 2007. The bulk of money will be spent to local projects and the renovation of museums and historic sites. The Centennial Celebration is being designed to acknowledge the accomplishments and sacrifices of those who have gone before us, while at the same time recognizing the promise of both today and tomorrow.
River City Players will produce a Centennial Celebration program that spotlights youth as they portray oklahoma characters from history and fiction. Through song, dance and narrative they will create an impressive array of images that constitute the essence of the state, its history, art, diversity, resources and people.
The two-hour program will be performed in Tahlequah from mid-June to mid-August. It will then tour the state beginning with the Oklahoma Museum Centennial Conference at Har-Ber Village and Shangri-La Resort. Students will receive professional semester, internship, and/or capstone credit for their participation. Students from all Oklahoma colleges and universities are welcome to audition.
Each summer, NSU produces family entertainment through the River City Players, Downtown Country, Jazz Lab, and Northeastern Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra.
"I have been coming to the NSU summer programs for years," said Jan Norman, executive director for Har-ber Village. "Their wonderful productions geared to families was a perfect fit for our Centennial project."
Other Har-Ber Village programs included within the Centennial Celebrations grant include Oklahoma Museum Association Conference scholarships, production, publication and distribution of schools of an Oklahoma History video and book, "The Story of the Pensacola Dam & Grand Lake O' the Cherokees," and community centennial events.
