Dr. Penisten to Chair Optometry Accreditation Council
NSU's Penisten to Chair Optometry Accreditation Council
Dr. David Nelson, American Optometric Association President,
has appointed Northeastern State University Professor Douglas Penisten,
O.D., Ph.D., as chairman of the St. Louis-based Accreditation Council
on Optometric Education.
The 11-member council is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
and oversees the evaluation and accreditation of 10 optometry doctoral
programs, 120 optometry residencies, and six optometric technician programs
in the Unites States, Canada, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Penisten, who joined the NSU faculty in 1988, has served in the American
Optometric Association volunteer structure for more than eight years.
He has served as the vice chairman of the Accreditation Council for five
years.
Penisten also serves on the Education and Conference Steering Committees
of the World Council of Optometry, the Examination Council of the National
Board of Examiners in Optometry, and as the president of the Optometric
Historical Society.
