Read Receives National Honors as Top OK Professor

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the council for Advancement and Support of Education have named Dr. Sue Ellen Read of Northeastern State University the 2001 Professor of the Year in an awards ceremony last night held in Washington D.C. Dr. Reed was selected from among five nominees in Oklahoma.

The U.S. Professors of the Year salutes the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country those who excel as teachers and influence the lives and careers of their students. It is recognized as one of the most prestigious awards honoring professors.

Im thrilled to be recognized by the Carnegie Foundation because I love my work, however, I do realize that it is an award of time and place, said Dr. Read. Being at a place like NSU at a time when Dr. Larry Williams is President made this honor possible. I believe that regional universities are the heart and soul of Oklahomas Higher Education System. Dr. Williams is the kind of leader who unleashes the possibilities for exploration that these unique settings can allow. I will say, unequivocally, that without his leadership, all that I have been able to do in the last four years would not have occurred.

Prior to joining the Northeastern State University faculty in 1988, Dr. Read worked as a school teacher and administrator. During her tenure at NSU, Professor Read has taught both graduate and undergraduate education students and has chaired the Masters of Teaching program.

Since 1997 when Dr. Read founded the Oklahoma Institute for Learning Styles (OIL), she has created the Native Scholars Program and the RESULTS Project and generated in excess of $2.5 million in funding for these three entities.

Dr. Reads preferred area of research is the learning styles of Native Americans. She has authored chapters for three books and her work has been the subject of several other scholarly articles and news stories. Dr. Read presents approximately 40 in-service presentations and keynote addresses each year.

In 1996, she was named NSUs Professor of the Year for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Read holds a B.A. in Speech from Northeastern State University; an M.A. in Counseling from Central State University; and a Ph.D. in Adult Education from the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Read is a fantastic teacher and well deserving of this award, said Dr. Larry Williams, NSU President. I believe that all students and colleagues of Dr. Read would echo the sentiment that she is a talented and dedicated instructor who has a great gift to inspire, enthuse and lead.

This is the second year in a row that a faculty member from Northeastern State University was chosen Professor of the Year, continued Williams. Last year, Dr. Jacqueline Wilcox, associate professor of English, won top honors. Their accomplishments are indicative of all our faculty members at Northeastern State University, helping us supply the highest quality educations in the state of Oklahoma.
