Northeastern State University’s GPS Department presents “Turkish Politics” – March 1

(Tahlequah, Okla.)-- Northeastern State Universitys Department of Geography, Political Science and Sociology (GPS) invites the public to attend a presentation by Dr. Birol Yesilada, professor of political science and international studies, as part of its Cultural Exchange Series.

Yesiladas Turkish Politics presentation will be held on NSUs Tahlequah campus, in the Webb Tower 614 onTuesday, March 1, 2016 at 2 p.m.He will be speaking to attendees via an online video call from Portland, Oregon.

Turkish Politics will cover topics such as the Islamization of Turkey led by President Erdogan and his party, the Justice and Development Party or AKP, the conflict between Erdogan and the Turkish Kurds, and the change in Turkeys regional role from a partner in peace to a participant in the Syrian Civil War.

Dr. Cheryl Van Den Handel, assistant professor of political science, said Yesiladas presentation will not only appeal to political science students and faculty, but to anyone in the academic community who is interested in the Middle East.

I met Dr. Yesilada while I was a Ph.D. student at Claremont Graduate University, where Yesilada conducted research there for many years. I heard him speak on numerous occasions and he is an engaging speaker with a broad knowledge of the Middle East.

Yesilada is an International Studies and Contemporary Turkish Studies Endowed Chair at Portland State University. He has been an invited policy consultant at various Departments of the US government, the Council on Foreign Relations, the U.S. Institute of Peace, and more. Yesilada was also invited by the White House to take part in a panel study at the RAND Corporation on Politics and Islam in the New Constitution of Afghanistan as part of the commission that drafted the new Constitution of that country.

Yesiladas recent publications include EU-Turkey Relations in the 21st Century, Islamization of Turkey Under the AKP Rule, The Emerging European Union, Comparative Political Parties and Party Elites and many more.
