Latin Dancing, Scuba Diving, and Fly Fishing Just Few of NSU's Summer Fun Classes

TAHLEQUAH - The Northeastern State University Center for Lifelong Education is offering diverse and interesting classes in Summer 2002. A multitude of computer classes, along with special-interest classes like scuba diving, Latin Dancing, and photography top the summertime docket.

Cake Decorating 101: Instructor Ruby Landsaw is an artisan who has been creating cake masterpieces for 17 years and will share her cake-baking secrets and homemade icing recipes. Instruction will be given on using different sizes and styles of tips for making fancy edges, roses, leaves, and for writing. Participants will need to purchase a beginners cake decorating kit and a 10"x 1" square or round Styrofoam shape to practice on in class. Meets Monday evenings, June 10-July 1, 6-8 p.m. in the NSU Practical Arts Building, room 209. The fee is $30.00.

Fly-Fishing for the Novice: This is a common sense course on the basic principles of learning to fly-fish for bass, trout and pan fish. Instruction will include how to select equipment, tie proper knots, reel and line setup, casting, fly selection, reading water, and fly tying. The class will include special guest instructors and video presentations. Meets Thursday evenings, July 11-August 15, 7-9 p.m. in Seminary Hall, room 207. The fee is $55.00.

Latin Dancing: This is the class for anyone who wants to learn those sensuous Latin dances seen in the movies and on television. Learn how to dance a little bit of Mambo to Lou Begas Mambo No. 5. Also learn the hip-swinging Rumba, the Cha-Cha-Cha, and the seductive Tango. A great class to take if you are going on a cruise, heading south, going night-clubbing in the city, to a special party, or just want to learn something new, fun, energizing, and exciting. Meets Tuesday evenings, July 2-23, 8-9:30 p.m. in the NSU Industrial Arts Building, room 202. The fee is $35.00.

Photography for Nature Enthusiasts: Line your photo albums after this six-week course that focuses on what film and lenses to use, ideal locations for shooting, getting the grain out of photographs, and making sure everything is in focus. Participants should already have a 35mm camera with the ability to change lenses, or at least a desire to get the information you need to see if this is a hobby you would like to pursue. Meets Tuesday evenings, June 11-July 23, 6-8 p.m. in the NSU Practical Arts Building, room 119. The fee is $35.00.

Scuba Diving: Heres your opportunity to become open-water certified in scuba diving. One of the fastest growing sports, diving is safe, fun, and can be economical. Completion of this course will certify you as an NASD and/or PADI Open Water Diver. This course will begin with an evening of classroom videos and discussion where you can learn the theory and rules of diving safely. Then students will attend a three-day training session where they will learn to use snorkel and scuba diving equipment. The final part of the course consists of open-water diving. Students can expect to spend one evening in the classroom and three days training in the pool and open water. Meets June 27, 7-9 p.m. in the Health and Physical Education Building, room 150; meets June 28, 29, and 30 at Genes Aqua Pro Shop on Lake Tenkiller. The fee is $155 per person. Limit is 15 per class.

Show Me The Money 101: Proposal Writing offers training to empower participants with information and skills needed to obtain supplemental monies for their organizations. The course focuses on finding sources of potential funding; aligning the purposes of the grantor/organization; distinguishing between the types of grants available for an LEA; identifying steps of the pre-writing process including recognition of the dangers of being funded; identifying steps in becoming more grant literate and a more aggressive proposal writer; distinguishing between supplanting and supplementing in creating a budget; and identifying successful strategies in writing to the funding criteria. Meets Thursday, July 25, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the NSU Practical Arts Building Basement, room 9B. The fee is $55.00.

Wus Chinese Cooking Class: Do you miss the Wus' Chinese food and egg rolls? In this cooking class you'll learn the secret recipes and the Wus will teach you how to cook authentic Chinese food with no MSG. Besides just cooking, the class will get a chance to eat tasty class projects. Meets Tuesday evenings, June 4-25, 6-8 p.m. in the NSU Practical Arts Building, room 209. The fee is $50.00.

The Center for Lifelong Education is also offering classes in French, German, sign language, and various classes in martial arts. Computer courses include Introduction to Computers; Introduction to Microsoft Windows - All Versions; Microsoft Excel 2000 - Introductory Level; Corel WordPerfect - Introductory Level; Microsoft Word 2000 - Introductory Level; Exploring the World Wide Web (for beginners); and Microsoft Power Point 2000 - Introductory Level.
