NSU's VITA Offers Free Income-Tax Preparation Assistance
NSU Offers Free Income-Tax Preparation Assistance
TAHLEQUAH - The Northeastern State University Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will be offering free income tax preparation for low-income and elderly taxpayers throughout this years tax season.
VITA has been offered for the past ten years and is a free public service activity sponsored by NSU accounting students and the IRS. The program is overseen locally by Dr. John Yeutter, NSU Assistant Professor of Accounting.
This is a great program for both the community and our NSU accounting majors, said Dr. Yeutter. Helping the community while providing real-life, hands-on experience for our students makes this program a success all around.
Families with a household income less than $30,000 are eligible for the free tax service. This includes NSU students and staff, as well as the Cherokee County community.
The VITA program will be taking advantage of the e-filing system. Using e-file software eliminates many of the errors associated with paper returns, and with IRS e-file, taxpayers can receive their tax refund sooner than regular mailed paper returns.
VITA will be open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Monday through Wednesday, Jan. 28 through April 10, in the Practical Arts Building, Room 125. The Practical Arts Building is located on the NSU Tahlequah campus at the corner of Grand and Garrison Avenues. The VITA program will temporarily close through the Universitys spring break scheduled March 18 through March 22.
Anyone interested in the VITA services should bring their W-2s, 1099s, and information concerning other income, as well as information for deductions or credits, Social Security numbers for all members of the household, and a copy of last year's tax return.
