No. 1 Ranked Redmen Break NSU Consecutive-Win Record

TAHLEQUAH - Northeastern State added another chapter to its storied basketball history on Jan. 17.

The Redmen, unbeaten and NCAA Division II's top-ranked team, won their 15th-consecutive game, posting a 66-52 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State before a capacity crowd at Dobbins Field House. NSU improved to 15-0 and broke the school record for consecutive wins in a season. The previous record of14 was held by the 1984-85 squad that finished the season at 26-3.

Jon Shepherd recorded his first double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds to spark NSU to the victory in its Lone Star Conference North Division opener. Ozzie Lockhart tied his season-high with 16 points by converting 60 percent of his shots, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc.

Shepherd scored eight of his points to lead Northeastern State on a 15-8 run to open the second half as NSU took control, 49-32, with 11:44 to play. The Redmen extended their lead to as many as 22 points, 61-39, at the 3:52 mark and SOSU (7-8 overall and 0-1 in league play) never came any closer than 14 the remainder of the night.

NSU's defense was equally as impressive. The Redmen held the Savages to just 38 percent shooting from the floor and 4-of-19 from three-point range. SOSU was a meager 6-of-11 from the free throw line.

LSC North action will continue for the Redmen on Saturday, Jan. 19, when NSU journeys to Ada to meet East Central University (4-11 overall and 0-1 LSC North) at 4 p.m. at the Kerr Activities Center. NSU's next home game will be Jan. 24 against Southwestern Oklahoma State. Both games will be webcast.
