NSU Living Literature Plans Trip to Ireland

TAHLEQUAH - Northeastern State University's Living Literature Center will be traveling to beautiful and historic Ireland May 24 through June 2, 2002, for its annual, open trip abroad. Anyone and everyone is invited to join the tour, which will include three nights in Dublin, one night in Kilkenny, one night in Cork, two nights in Limerick, and one night in Galway.

Scheduled for the tour are visits to W.B. Yeats's castle, memorialized in The Tower, and Lady Gregory's estate, Coole Parke. Travelers will also see the Aran Islands, setting for John Synge's revivalist plays; attend a theatrical production at the Abbey Theatre, birthplace of the Irish Literary Revival; visit the village of Galway, emblem of the "Romantic West" in James Joyce's work; and walk through the streets of Dublin, the site of the Easter Rising in 1916, a foundational moment in Irish nationalism.

The tour will also include a panoramic sightseeing tour of Dublin, Trinity College and the Book of Kells, Dublin Castle, Kilmainham jail, St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Glendalough, a monastic settlement, Kilkenny Castle, Cobh Harbor/Queenstown, Castle Blarney Wollen Mills for great shopping, Bunratty Castle, Ring of Kerry, and Cliffs of Moher.

The cost per person is $2,100, which includes airfare, hotel, coach tour, Irish breakfast and dinner each day, and entrance fees. A $500 deposit is due by the first of February 2002. After that small monthly payments may be applied toward the trip.

Students may receive three hours of college credit for participating in the trip. All participants will receive a guide book in the spring detailing the trip, as well as have opportunities to discuss aspects of Irish culture beforehand as a way of preparing for the tour.

The tour will be led by newly appointed Living Literature Director and Associate Professor of English, Dr. Christopher Malone.
